When I was a child, I encountered this book for the first time in my uncle’s library. The book was a simplified children’s version of this book. I liked the book very much. Though I did not understood the story properly as a child, I was amazed by the map of treasure island I found in the book. Ever since then I never forgot the map or the story of the treasure island. This was the third time I read the book and at last fully understood it, thanks to the movie series of the famous Pirates of the Caribbean and even more famous the character of Captain Jack Sparrow. The concepts like “Walking the plank”, “flying Jolly Roger in the bird’s nest” etc are fully understood only if you already know what they mean. Otherwise you never understand the novel and lose interest in it. Actually, it happened in the past when I was not aware of the pirate and navigational terms. अस्मानी म्हणजे वेगवेगळ्या मासिकांमधून प्रकाशित झालेल्या विज्ञानकथांचा एक उत्कृष्ट संग्रह आहे. विज्ञानकथा हा प्रकार आता मराठीला नवीन राहिलेला नाही. अनेक वर्षं दुर्लक्षित राहिलेल्या विज्ञानकथेनं आता चांगलं बाळसं धरलं आहे. आज ज्ञात असलेल्या विज्ञानाच्या खांद्यावरून भविष्यातल्या शक्यतांकडे डोकावून पाहण्याचा प्रयत्न करणारा हा वाङ्मयप्रकार आता लोकप्रिय झालेला आहे. असं डोकावून पाहणं विस्मयजनक तर असतंच, शिवाय ते मनोरंजकही ठरतं. शुभदा गोगटे यांची कथांची निवड चांगली आहे. वेगवेगळ्या विषयांवर आधारित असलेल्या विज्ञान कथांमुळे एकसुरीपणा टाळला गेला आहे. विज्ञानकथा लिहताना अतिकल्पनाविलास केलेला नाही. विज्ञानकथा शास्त्रशुध्द विचारांवर आधारित असल्याने वाचनीय झाल्या आहेत. शुभदा गोगटे हे मराठी विज्ञान साहित्यातलं एक मान्यवर नाव. विज्ञानकथा, विज्ञानकादंबरी, विज्ञानलेख असे अनेक प्रकार त्यांनी समर्थपणे हाताळले आहेत. त्यांच्या अनेक कथांना व कादंबरीला विविध पुरस्कार मिळालेले आहेत. क्लोनिंग, कालप्रवास, यंत्रमानव अशा अनेक विज्ञान विषयांवरच्या त्यांच्या कथा या संग्रहात समाविष्ट आहेत. गवत खाऊन काम करणार्या यंत्रम...

या पुस्तकाची पहिली आवृत्ती १९६८ च्या सुमारास प्रसिद्ध झाली. अगदी शाळेत असल्यापासून ग्रंथालयात या पुस्तकाचे दर्शन घडायचे. पण त्याचे जाडजुड स्वरुप पाहता वाचायची हिम्मत झाली नाही. आता जेव्हा वाचन हा माझा नियमीत छंद झाला आहे, तेव्हा हे पुस्तक वाचण्याची संधी मी घेतली. मराठी कादंबरी लेखनाचा एक उत्कृष्ट नमुना म्हणून या कलाकृतीकडे पाहिले जाते ते योग्यच असल्याचा अनुभव मला ही कादंबरी वाचताना आला. रणजीत देसाईंनी अतिशय सोप्या आणि ओघवत्या भाषेत हे शिवचरीत्र मांडले आहे. कादंबरीचा शेवटचा १०% भाग वगळता कुठेही रटाळपणा आलेला नाही. हे चरित्र ६०% काल्पनीक तर ४०% सत्य या स्वरुपात मांडले आहे. त्यामुळे महाराजांच्या इतिहाची माहिती आणि कादंबरीचा रसास्वाद या दोन्ही गोष्टी साध्य होतात. तत्कालिन महाराष्ट्राची परिस्थिती अत्यंत गंभीर होती. महाराष्ट्रात बहामनी सुलतानांचे राज्य होते. वरकरणी सहिष्णू वाटणारे हे सत्ताधिश हिंदू जनतेवर अनन्वीत अत्याचार करीत होते. संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्राचे इस्लामीकरण हाच त्यांचा एक कलमी कार्यक्रम होता. दुर्दैवाने त्याला आपले हिंदु सरदारही त्यांना साथ देत होते. शिवाजी महाराजांनी स्वराज्याचा ...
