Opinion : A country obessed with Reservation

History
Long ago when India was still under foreign rule, Indian social system was at all time low with its treacherous caste system. The caste system of Hindus made sure that only a minor privileged class receives all the education and riches of the business with a high level in society. While large masses of people known as backward classes have to spend their life serving these people with no education and poor earnings. This was such a cruel reality that it still exists in mind of these people today. The question is why such a large number of people remained silent through thousands of years and had no struggle at all against this injustice. Isn’t it their fault that they had not revolted against such people? The question remains unanswered. In fact today no one has daring to ask this question. He likely to be hurt by people whose interest lies in the politics of the caste system.

Real Story
Once an American friend of mine asked me a question. All over the world people are fighting to prove that their religion, spoken language, race etc. is superior to others. While in India this is exactly opposite. Everybody seems to try to prove that he is from backward class and deserves reservation in education, jobs and not to stop their, also in promotions. I told him this is not without reason. Everybody here knows that to keep public happy is job of today’s politicians of democracy. They need to keep people happy so that they get their votes in the election. Just you need to demonstrate the huge manpower behind your wishes. The Maratha Morch is live example of such demonstrations. With so many people demanding something, nobody can say no to them and risk losing election in the next term. Today being elected to democratic position and be in the ruling party is such multi crore lucrative business that only a fool will take risk to reject their demands. So everybody is engaged in trying to prove that he is from a socially backward class and should be bestowed with a reservation in all the facilities he can get, so that his caste is uplifted and they would get fair share of the pie.

Politics
Political leadership know the criticality of such demands. They initially remain silent and ignore such demands till it is proved that sufficient vote bank is behind such efforts. They start considering such demands only after that. The strategy of political parties is to create a mess first and then they step in as a saviour to show that they have solved the problem to the benefit of people and country.  A few intellectual people oppose this but no one listen to them. Even court finds itself helpless to stop such injustice towards unreserved people. Court just does the job of delaying the justice and at end discovers that this not a matter of court but should be implemented by government by making necessary amendments to law or constitution. Everybody is trying to brush off its responsibility. This is what happens in the democracy.

People’s Opinion
If one asks general public everybody seems to be against reservation system, but nobody has guts to speak in public fearing backlash from public. People know that days of social injustice are gone. To some extent the backward classes are themselves responsible for their condition because they made no efforts to fight against this system and get uplifted themselves throughout thousands of years in the past. Now today you just can’t tell everybody that since you were the victim of injustice for last thousand years and you should be allowed to do the same injustice to other open category people for next thousand years. This will be like taking revenge. Instead of fighting for such non sense demands all people must take advantage of liberal social system of today and work hard to liberate oneself and his society from backwardness.
Some time ago a movement was started near Delhi area called youth for equality. Mainly students from various colleges in Delhi and neighbouring area created a lot of noise regarding equal opportunities to everybody and against any prejudice in the name of caste or social backwardness. Some students even went to the extent of burning themselves in public. At one time the movement seemed strong enough to shake the dead politicians and legal system. They were appreciated by many intellectual people all over India from various classes. But after some time the movement suddenly lost its momentum and lost in the chaos of overcrowded India. Nothing concrete was achieved and sacrifices made by some students who injured or died during the struggle went in vain.

Result
People are talking today about equality. Equality means equal chances for everybody and not concessions for one section and nothing for others. Rather than differentiation based on class system it should made on economic basis. We can see many poor people in India. Small children begging on streets and at traffic signals. Nobody seems to work for them. Where are so called charity organisations, NGOs? Where is CRY? I never saw anybody working for them. There is news in newspapers every now and then that many children died of malnutrition in rural adivasi areas. What government is doing for them? Nothing! All people, let them be of any caste, if are economically backward should get free education. But competing for a job should be purely on the basis of merits and capability of the person. People get jobs based on the reservation system and literally corrode the system since they not capable of doing their jobs, while many talented people are jobless because they belong to open category. This is how we are going to build our modern progressive India? Anybody has answer?
